[12:02] ღ Julie Atais ღ (julieatais): Hi everyone
[12:02] Sheila Yoshikawa: VWER is a forum to educate and inform the community about issues that are important and relevant to education in virtual worlds. We work in collaboration with the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium. This is a public meeting, so we will be keeping and publishing a transcript. The transcripts can be found at https://vwer.info/ The VWER continues to develop a community of educators from around the world.

[12:06] Sheila Yoshikawa: OK
[12:06] Sheila Yoshikawa: Thank you
[12:06] Ais Aeon: Hello, my name is Ais. I’ve been in SL since 2007. These days I’m mostly a builder. I create historical buildings and objects, such as 19th century mormon architecture of ancient Egyptian furniture for SL. I also make mesh animals. My education & exhibit focus in SL has always been extinct animals and vanishing ecosystems. In RL I used to be a QA evaluator and then a corporate trainer in a financial institution, currently undergoing career transition.

[12:07] Sheila Yoshikawa: This week’s focus is – Telling our mythic story
[12:07] Sheila Yoshikawa: VWER has had its application for exhibitor space at the VWBPE conference accepted
[12:07] Sheila Yoshikawa: That’s https://www.vwbpe.org/
[12:08] Sheila Yoshikawa: Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education: Mythic Origins
March 14-16, 2024
[12:08] Sheila Yoshikawa: We have a plot in the rainforest basin biome
[12:08] Sheila Yoshikawa: I have put up over there a couple of photos of the plot’s situation
[12:08] Skipper Abel: Hi everyone
[12:08] Sheila Yoshikawa: Hi Skipper
[12:09] Sheila Yoshikawa: the exhibition space is 24×24 which is the size of the wooden outline I’ve put on the grass overthere

Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable
[12:10] Beth Ghostraven: (btw I should have put this in Intros – Jamie said he’s busy and can’t make it, but that he and Selby are ok)
[12:10] Sheila Yoshikawa: we are probably going to have a little treehouse, some paths and trees and perhaps some water as it is supposed to be wetland
[12:10] Sheila Yoshikawa: thanks @Beth!
[12:10] Sheila Yoshikawa: Haven’t seen Selby for a while so glad of that
[12:10] Sheila Yoshikawa: One think we usually have on our exhibit are photos of “VWER regulars” like Beth, Pi, Marly, Liss
[12:11] Sheila Yoshikawa: and Skipper we will add you this year if that is OK
[12:11] Sheila Yoshikawa: with notecards with more about them
[12:11] Skipper Abel: Yes please
[12:11] Sheila Yoshikawa: also we usually have some posters with links to some past chatlogs
[12:12] Sheila Yoshikawa: the last years the theme was “Space” and so the things I have are cyber themed, but they will be a bit more organic this year
[12:12] Beth Ghostraven: (I sent you an IM, Sheila)
[12:12] Sheila Yoshikawa: So
[12:12] Sheila Yoshikawa: By the way
[12:13] Sheila Yoshikawa: if you think you are a VWER regular (and that doesn’t mean to have to be here EVERY week!)
[12:13] Sheila Yoshikawa: you could have a picture and notecard displayed, we are happy for people to come forward and be included!
[12:14] Sheila Yoshikawa: just drop me an IM
[12:14] Sheila Yoshikawa: or say right now
[12:14] Wisdomseeker (lissena): Myth is an exciting theme
[12:14] PI (pi.illios): It is Liss
[12:14] Sheila Yoshikawa: also @Pi you create storytellers in your exhibits, so I thought we could have some storytelling people
[12:14] PI (pi.illios): I love it
[12:15] Wisdomseeker (lissena): thinks of Athena popping out of Zeus’s head
[12:15] Ais Aeon: It is a bit more specific than just myth, it is “mythic origins”.
[12:15] Wisdomseeker (lissena): true Ais
[12:15] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[12:15] PI (pi.illios): I like the idea
[12:15] Ais Aeon: Which is something I kind of more limiting than if it was just “myth”.
[12:15] Sheila Yoshikawa: but I’m not sure whether VWER’s origins were mythic?
[12:16] Sheila Yoshikawa: in fact I think I got a bit bogged down in the “origins” part and just went for “Myth” in my application
[12:16] Wisdomseeker (lissena): Well, Kali has become a myth here–did she found it?
[12:16] Marly (marly.milena): ere are always stories behind origins; However, the personal views of this may vary from one to another
[12:16] Savanah (savanah.calavera): nods
[12:16] Sheila Yoshikawa: I suppose one thing is that because people move on and disappear in SL, the origins of something can become cloudy, if not mythic
[12:17] Marly (marly.milena): There///personal….my fingers worn out from an art class
[12:17] Sheila Yoshikawa: if fingers have to be worn out @Marly a nice way to wear them
[12:17] PI (pi.illios): But everything we try here in the beginning are “origins” somehow
[12:17] Wisdomseeker (lissena): yes–I think it’s a figurative term
[12:17] Sheila Yoshikawa: Do you think we should collect some stories about the origins of VWER?
[12:18] Wisdomseeker (lissena): that would be interesting Sheila
[12:18] Sheila Yoshikawa whispers: people’s different stories of being drawn to (or leaving) VWER?
[12:18] PI (pi.illios): That would be awesome
[12:18] Savanah (savanah.calavera): Could it be weaved into a story then, and be told by your storytellers?
[12:18] Savanah (savanah.calavera): “mythic”?
[12:18] Sheila Yoshikawa: That would be a nice idea!
[12:18] Skipper Abel: I agree
[12:19] Wisdomseeker (lissena): we are doing our immersive under Inspiration Bay and using fish as storytellers 🙂
[12:19] Sheila Yoshikawa: It would be interesting to find out how many of the people who were there at the start we could still contact
[12:19] Savanah (savanah.calavera): thats fun
[12:20] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Liss great!
[12:20] Wisdomseeker (lissena): having a team helps come up with and execute good ideas
[12:20] Marly (marly.milena): What year did VWER start? I was not here at very beginning but have been here a long time
[12:21] Sheila Yoshikawa: 2008 isn’t it
[12:21] Wisdomseeker (lissena): the group was founded by AJ Brooks
[12:21] Wisdomseeker (lissena): the group says
[12:21] Sheila Yoshikawa: haah yes it says so on the poster just along from here
[12:21] Wisdomseeker (lissena): anyone know who that is?
[12:21] Sheila Yoshikawa: Yes, I think AJ is still around?
[12:22] Marly (marly.milena): A mythic character? LOL
[12:22] Wisdomseeker (lissena): LOL
[12:22] Sheila Yoshikawa: no, he was definitely real
[12:22] Second Life: Items successfully shared.
[12:22] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think IS still real
[12:22] Sheila Yoshikawa: lol
[12:22] Marly (marly.milena): But why didn’t he stay?
[12:22] Kamilah Hauptmann: It’s easy to become one when everyone else’s imaginations run away with them.

[12:23] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Kamilah you mean – it is easy to become a myth?
[12:23] Ais Aeon: Oh, I for sure know some SL groups whose founders died in the 2000s and became pretty much mythic epic characters of popular lore.
[12:23] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think I have also got caught up in thinking about “what is a myth” “what is mythic”
[12:23] Marly (marly.milena): Can we find out what happened to AJ and what his origin story is for VWER?
[12:24] Marly (marly.milena): And why he didn’t stay?
[12:24] Sheila Yoshikawa: He was last inworld in 2022, at least as AJ Brooks
[12:24] Kamilah Hauptmann: Arcadia Asylum is such a figure, there’ve been a number in Caldon’s history. Get out into the community and be a little bombastic, people start telling the story better than you would yourself, and it gets better every time.
[12:24] Wisdomseeker (lissena): AJ was last inworld is May of 2022
[12:24] Savanah (savanah.calavera): That could become part of the Hero’s Journey
[12:24] Wisdomseeker (lissena): [from AJ’s profile] I am currently the custodian for the Montclair State University islands. I am the founder and moderator of the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable, which meets each week on Tuesdays at 2:30pm.
[12:25] Wisdomseeker (lissena): from his profile
[12:25] Beth Ghostraven: Kami, one could argue that you are a mythical character in Caledon :o)
[12:25] Wisdomseeker (lissena): Is Montclair still here?
[12:25] Marly (marly.milena): @Liss, but it seems he quit VWER long before his last appearance here
[12:25] Beth Ghostraven: https://www.montclair.edu/profilepages/view_profile.php?username=keltona
[12:25] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think in terms of VWER, it is something that people want to do for some years, and then it becomes to much of a commitment and they want to move on
[12:25] Kamilah Hauptmann: @Beth, that’s why I came to this meeting in case I could offer any insights.
[12:25] Beth Ghostraven: that’s his current university profile, I think
[12:25] Sheila Yoshikawa: if they feel they have done all they want to do
[12:26] Wisdomseeker (lissena): wonder if he would want to come in for this?
[12:26] Marly (marly.milena): So, dear Sheila, what keeps you going after all this time?
[12:26] Beth Ghostraven: and sometimes they become burned out on one thing, but not everything about SL
[12:26] Savanah (savanah.calavera): Yes
[12:26] Sheila Yoshikawa: He might not want to come inworld but I’m pretty sure he’d be willing to contribute his origins story
[12:26] Beth Ghostraven: Kali and Iggy contributed a vast amount while they were here, but are no longer involved in VWER
[12:26] Wisdomseeker (lissena): good idea Sheila!
[12:27] Beth Ghostraven: did Kali take over from AJ? or was there someone else in between?
[12:27] Wisdomseeker (lissena): you were and are a hero for keeping VWER going
[12:27] Beth Ghostraven: Kali PIzzaro
[12:27] Sheila Yoshikawa: lol @Marly I think a combination of things! Perhaps I can reflect on that for my origin story! I have been attending VWER since 2008/9 but only now and then to start with
[12:27] Marly (marly.milena): So, dear Sheila, what keeps you going after all this time?
[12:27] Beth Ghostraven: Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia)
[12:28] Marly (marly.milena): Sorry for repeating the question. I didn’t want it to get lost! LOL
[12:28] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes Iggy, who went back to the land I think though still teaches
[12:28] Sheila Yoshikawa: he had a tractor in the physical world, I remember
[12:28] Beth Ghostraven: yes – and Iggy may have retired recently
[12:28] Wisdomseeker (lissena): this is sad: from his profile – I’m no longer teaching with Virtual Worlds, as interest has waned on my campus. Onward into the past!
[12:28] Sheila Yoshikawa: I am a Facebook friend with Kali, I could ask her to tell her story
[12:28] PI (pi.illios): We are down to memory lane
[12:29] Wisdomseeker (lissena): yes Pi 🙂
[12:29] Beth Ghostraven: yes, oral history in the making!
[12:29] Beth Ghostraven: all we need is a campfire
[12:29] PI (pi.illios): exiting
[12:29] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes, not sure whether Memory Lane is mythic (though we could have a literal Memory Lane in the exhibit!
[12:29] Wisdomseeker (lissena): Kali is also active on LinkedIn
[12:29] Kamilah Hauptmann: Telling memories can be talking about the legends and myths of your own story, and your own story is the now.
[12:29] PI (pi.illios): Good idea!
[12:30] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Kamilah yes!
[12:30] Sheila Yoshikawa: Also, do we want to create new myths?
[12:30] Sheila Yoshikawa: or for our future to be mythic?
[12:30] Beth Ghostraven: I think it was in 2013 that I started taking over Iggy’s job of doing the transcripts – I can’t believe I”ve been doing this for over 10 years!
[12:31] Beth Ghostraven: or, attempting to do it, with mixed results, lol
[12:31] PI (pi.illios): of course I think so
[12:31] Ais Aeon: Thank you for doing that Beth
[12:31] Marly (marly.milena): I like the stability of belonging to several groups where I know some people well. Each is somewhat different from the others but they all have that continuity (WBH.NPC, VWER and now, VWEC)
[12:31] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes @Marly
[12:32] Marly (marly.milena): Are you hearing a voice?
[12:32] Beth Ghostraven: (btw I’m looking for someone to take over or at least help, if you know of anyone who might be interested)
[12:32] Beth Ghostraven: I don’t have ears on, sorry
[12:32] Wisdomseeker (lissena): coming through Beth
[12:32] Marly (marly.milena): Who are the people talking?
[12:32] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Beth I think you are broadcasting?
[12:33] Beth Ghostraven: oops sorry
[12:33] Savanah (savanah.calavera): ^^
[12:33] Wisdomseeker (lissena): :))
[12:33] Sheila Yoshikawa: lol
[12:33] Beth Ghostraven: you were hearing the tv next to me, lol
[12:33] Beth Ghostraven: Savanah, thank you for catching that!
[12:33] Marly (marly.milena): Hahahaha…. surprise occurrences wake people up!
[12:33] Beth Ghostraven: lol yes
[12:34] Sheila Yoshikawa: My worst ever was when I was in a presentation in SL and phoned someone up and was was talking about how I was in a presentation but blah blah and then I realised I wasn’t muted
[12:34] Sheila Yoshikawa: It was SOOOO rude of me
[12:34] Kamilah Hauptmann: Every microphone is always on. 🙂
[12:34] Marly (marly.milena): Like when Ellen deGeneris came out
[12:34] Marly (marly.milena): Haha
[12:34] Sheila Yoshikawa: OK!
[12:35] Sheila Yoshikawa: Do you think we need to reflect further on what “mythic origins” mean?
[12:35] Sheila Yoshikawa: or just go with what we want to show?
[12:35] Sheila Yoshikawa: and do people have any further ideas
[12:35] Sheila Yoshikawa: INCLUDING if anyone wants to tell their VWER story
[12:36] Ais Aeon: Heh, for me it was doing a remote training session for some 10 people. We went on a break, I forgot to turn off my camera. So I hear: “Oh what the heck is she doing there?” And someone replied: “It is not what you think. She is playing with her cat” 😉
[12:36] Marly (marly.milena): There is a quality to “mythic” that distinguishes it from plain old origins. We could get clearer about that
[12:36] Sheila Yoshikawa: lol haha
[12:36] Kamilah Hauptmann: To elevate it from ‘our story’ to Mythic, you’ll need some bombast in your writing.
[12:36] Stranger Nightfire: I remember when an MSNBC new lady went into the ladies restroom and started a conversation with her mic broadcasting — live over the state of the union address
[12:36] Ais Aeon: That was my worst ever
[12:36] Stranger Nightfire: was talking trash about her sister in law too
[12:36] Beth Ghostraven: hahaha Ais, that’s funny in retrospect
[12:36] Stranger Nightfire: talk about a oops moment
[12:36] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Marly yes mythic sounds grand and mysterious and a little ambiguous
[12:37] Beth Ghostraven: omg Stranger, that’s terrible lol
[12:37] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Stranger yikes
[12:37] Marly (marly.milena): And that murderer who was caught because he was talking in the bathroom with a mic on? Anyone remember that?
[12:37] Beth Ghostraven: the nice thing about VWBPE exhibits is that they’re 3D, so we can show a lot more than just text and pictures if we want to
[12:37] Wisdomseeker (lissena): that’s where storytellers can work well
[12:37] Sheila Yoshikawa: haha there are a lot of … urban myths … about this kind of thing but also a lot of true stories!
[12:38] Marly (marly.milena): I would say that one aspect of the mythic part is the vision behind the story
[12:38] Sheila Yoshikawa: Good point @Marly!
[12:38] Marly (marly.milena): What was the dream that led to the creation?
[12:38] Sheila Yoshikawa: So we could certainly ask AJ about his vision
[12:38] Marly (marly.milena): Yes, and we could look at our own versions of what we wanted this to be
[12:39] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think my vision is gentler than what I think of as “mythic”
[12:40] Sheila Yoshikawa: By the way our proposal for a VWER Compass Points discussion was also accepted for VWBPE
[12:40] Marly (marly.milena): Sheila, if you were going to align yourself with one archetype of Greek goddess. who would it be? That could help in seeing the aspects of that figure
[12:41] Sheila Yoshikawa: That’s a nice idea!
[12:41] Sheila Yoshikawa: I wonder if we could get god and goddess storytellers?
[12:41] Kamilah Hauptmann: fascinating
[12:41] Sheila Yoshikawa: hmmm possibly Athena
[12:42] Sheila Yoshikawa: well more than Aphrodite or Hera anyway
[12:42] Kamilah Hauptmann: I wonder if you could wrap it all in a creation myth to keep the individual stories cohesive.
[12:42] PI (pi.illios): I will try to look for it
[12:42] Marly (marly.milena): LOL, yes
[12:42] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes! creation myth!
[12:42] Wisdomseeker (lissena): where do you find storytellers, Pi?
[12:42] Kamilah Hauptmann: You are the Gods telling the stories of the Titans.
[12:42] Ais Aeon: Someone does not identify with Hera? gasp 😉
[12:43] Sheila Yoshikawa: Did VWER spring fully formed from AJ’s brain (think someone talked about that right at the start)
[12:43] PI (pi.illios): I look in MP
[12:43] Wisdomseeker (lissena): for specific ones?
[12:43] Marly (marly.milena): If we could draw on our own ethnic/racial backgrounds, we could find stories that illuminate our journey.
[12:43] Wisdomseeker (lissena): @Pi
[12:43] PI (pi.illios): there are of different kinds
[12:43] Sheila Yoshikawa: it was @Liss mentioned Athena
[12:44] PI (pi.illios): I use a Script that nam gave me
[12:44] Wisdomseeker (lissena): I have a script–finding the right look is a challenge
[12:44] Wisdomseeker (lissena): I have Yoda as a storyteller 🙂
[12:45] Wisdomseeker (lissena): wondering I Macsi makes some
[12:45] Sheila Yoshikawa: not sure about my racial background – the roles for the women in the Camelot myths weren’t so good as the men’s, think it’s appropriate a knight’s tale
[12:45] Wisdomseeker (lissena): *if
[12:45] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think I have some greek statues in my inventory, if it was possible to pop a script in them
[12:46] Kamilah Hauptmann: Go full Boudicca.
[12:46] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes I was thinking of her!
[12:46] PI (pi.illios): animesh also are awesome
[12:46] Sheila Yoshikawa: knives in the chariot wheels
[12:46] Marly (marly.milena): Thinking about Jewish folktales and how problems got solved and people worked together
[12:46] Ais Aeon: Women in Camelot myths? Lady of the Lake and Morrigan?
[12:46] Kamilah Hauptmann: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/13436290 4,000 Years of Uppity Women: Rebellious Belles, Daring Dames, and Headstrong Heroines Through the Ages
[12:47] Ais Aeon: Sound pretty badass to me ;0
[12:47] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think the lady of the lake had a bit of a dull life?
[12:47] Sheila Yoshikawa: thanks @Kamilah!
[12:47] Wisdomseeker (lissena): I bet your statues would work, Sheila
[12:48] Wisdomseeker (lissena): do they allow animesh in the exhibits? I am not sure
[12:48] Wisdomseeker (lissena): lag issues?
[12:48] PI (pi.illios): oh ok
[12:48] Beth Ghostraven: is animesh script-heavy?
[12:48] Wisdomseeker (lissena): I don’t know
[12:48] Wisdomseeker (lissena): just asking
[12:48] Sheila Yoshikawa: I’ve got 2 Zeus statues
[12:49] Beth Ghostraven: animesh would certainly be more engaging
[12:49] Beth Ghostraven: I’ll ask at the organizing committee meeting on Monday
[12:49] PI (pi.illios): maybe I have to look at my Ottoman soldier lol
[12:49] Wisdomseeker (lissena): great Beth!
[12:49] Wisdomseeker (lissena): let us know
[12:49] Ais Aeon: Well, if we are talking about ideas outside of VWER history… my original idea I had for my own exhibit this year was the mythic origins of Mormonism and Joseph Smith’s first vision.. or the 4 different versions of it. But decided not to do it, as It could be seen as critical of the faith and I’m an outsider. I had a bad last 2 RL months and did not need religious drama in SL on top of it. I think it would be a cool exhibit if an actual RLDS/LDS person would do it.
[12:50] Kamilah Hauptmann: Animesh eats up a lot of land impact, but takes way less script to control, basically just an animator.
[12:50] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes that’s tricky @Ais
[12:50] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think there are others here with exhibits, how are you tackling the mythic theme?
[12:51] Sheila Yoshikawa: one has to be sensitive around those areas
[12:51] Sheila Yoshikawa: OK stranger
[12:51] Sheila Yoshikawa: You are booked to be an exhibit!
[12:52] Sheila Yoshikawa: We will be very happy to have you tell your story
[12:52] Sheila Yoshikawa: Actually if you wanted to do any readings that would be OK!
[12:52] Sheila Yoshikawa: being more serious
[12:52] Stranger Nightfire: I will send out my thunderbolts in a bit

[12:52] Wisdomseeker (lissena): Stranger is an awesome Zeus
[12:53] Sheila Yoshikawa: we have incurred the wrath of Zeus!
[12:53] PI (pi.illios): Hahahaha
[12:54] Stranger Nightfire: okay will have to show my wrath then
[12:54] Ais Aeon: The wrath of Zeus… did anyone incur that other than his dad and his wife? 😉
[12:54] Savanah (savanah.calavera): oh my
[12:54] Savanah (savanah.calavera): ^^
[12:54] Beth Ghostraven: wow!
[12:54] Wisdomseeker (lissena): wow!
[12:54] PI (pi.illios): I jumped
[12:54] Ais Aeon: That was impressive.
[12:54] Sheila Yoshikawa: wow!
[12:54] Ais Aeon: Ais claps
[12:55] Wisdomseeker (lissena): he is usually very mild-mannered but when you get him angry…
[12:55] Stranger Nightfire: okay got that out of my system
[12:55] Beth Ghostraven: we could make a cardboard cut-out of Stranger :o)
[12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Ais yes my impression was he got angry with anyone who didn’t just do what he said?
[12:55] Ais Aeon: 😀
[12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: OK
[12:56] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think that is about it for this week
[12:56] Marly (marly.milena): I could do the Cleopatra speech (I dreamed there was an Emperor Antony) Larger than life depiction of leadership….How do we dream up who our leaders are in SL and what they are capable of?
[12:56] Sheila Yoshikawa: thank you everyone for the ideas#
[12:56] Sheila Yoshikawa: @Marly any mythic story you are willing to contribute would be welcome!
[12:56] Ais Aeon: SL leaders? My land baron is hardly a larger-than-life figure. 😉
[12:56] Beth Ghostraven: The conference is only about 3 weeks away!
[12:57] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[12:57] PI (pi.illios): it was a collective brainstorm
[12:57] Sheila Yoshikawa: I was thinking that @Beth
