2018-06-28 Visit to CVL “Crystal Futuristic Library”

Transcript of the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable: June 28 2018
Topic: The Community Virtual Library’s “Crystal Futuristic Library”

28-06-18 vwer_015

This week’s session was mainly in voice, without transcription. Valibrarian gave a tour, firstly of the Community Virtual Library’s “Crystal Futuristic Library” at the SL 15 year birthday celebration at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL15B%20Stupendous/188/238/23

Val wrote in her notecard “Title: Crystal Cathedral: Libraries and Education
Design: This exhibit consists of a crystal structure illustrating various educational communities connecting and collaborating with the Community Virtual Library (past, present, and future). A “crystal cathedral” concept illustrates the growth of academic learning spaces not limited to physical space and time. Participants will wander the cathedral to view educational examples including photos and machinima.
Theme related: Libraries are highly ordered structures similar to crystals! This exhibit celebrates Second Life’s 15th Birthday with a demonstration of virtual world libraries connecting educators and learners over the past decade. Celebrate the advantages SL has given learners through immersion in persistent spaces. Librarians can document and archive the evolution of virtual worlds…growing a virtual crystal cathedral. Thank you, Second Life!”
Secondly the VWER group visited the Community Virtual Library in Second Life at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cookie/201/203/22
More pictures than usual are presented (taken by Sheila Yoshikawa) to give a flavour of the tour.

28-06-18 vwer_007

[2018/06/28 12:21] Marly (marly.milena): Ethics
[2018/06/28 12:23] Marly (marly.milena): A lot of people go to Creative Commons to protect stuff from commercial use but to allow people to use stuff
[2018/06/28 12:23] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes Marly, that’s a good practice
[2018/06/28 12:24] Valibrarian Gregg: yes Marly! and a museum space about Creative Commons would be very useful! to help people understand about the licenses
[2018/06/28 12:24] Sheila Yoshikawa: Interesting
[2018/06/28 12:26] Esparanza Freese: thanks

28-06-18 vwer_009

[2018/06/28 12:27] Sheila Yoshikawa: Yes, it has got a nice feel
[2018/06/28 12:27] Sheila Yoshikawa: this building and the interior
[2018/06/28 12:28] Sheila Yoshikawa: are you having any events in here?
[2018/06/28 12:29] Valibrarian Gregg: It could be lag here!
[2018/06/28 12:30] Valibrarian Gregg: You may hear better when we get to the Community Virtual LIbrary in a bit
[2018/06/28 12:30] Sheila Yoshikawa: no, you can’t copyright an idea

[2018/06/28 12:35] Marly (marly.milena): I JUST CRASHED
[2018/06/28 12:35] Marly (marly.milena): Didnt get the link
[2018/06/28 12:35] Marly (marly.milena): Lost the prior chat
[2018/06/28 12:36] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): justs min
[2018/06/28 12:36] Sheila Yoshikawa: I certainly think the database is a good idea
[2018/06/28 12:36] Sheila Yoshikawa: the traditional core area of organising and providing access to information!
[2018/06/28 12:37] Valibrarian Gregg: Marly suggests a matrix of “cross referencing”
[2018/06/28 12:37] Valibrarian Gregg: I think the database might help with that at some point
[2018/06/28 12:37] Valibrarian Gregg: Alyse is a new librarian that is the lead on the database
[2018/06/28 12:37] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think of events and locations and groups etc
[2018/06/28 12:38] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes so can cross reference
[2018/06/28 12:38] Valibrarian Gregg: Yes Sheila! It is so hard to keep up with events in virtual worlds (for education)
[2018/06/28 12:38] Sheila Yoshikawa: so essentially adding multiple subject keywords and using Boolean ;-)) ?
[2018/06/28 12:38] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): A data base can give cross referenced results
[2018/06/28 12:39] Valibrarian Gregg: Esparanza mentions getting the topics ahead of time- in educational group events

28-06-18 vwer_016

[2018/06/28 12:39] Sheila Yoshikawa: Again I think they do get announced ahead e.g. I posted about this I think on Friday
[2018/06/28 12:39] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): You can combine Google calendars
[2018/06/28 12:39] Sheila Yoshikawa: but it was on Facebook and Google+
[2018/06/28 12:39] Valibrarian Gregg: SLED listserv?
[2018/06/28 12:40] Sheila Yoshikawa: and ajust as you say that may not be something you are checking
[2018/06/28 12:40] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes I use SLED
[2018/06/28 12:40] Sheila Yoshikawa: but I don’t always post there
[2018/06/28 12:40] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): I dont use it or look at it
[2018/06/28 12:40] Valibrarian Gregg: Thinkerer- is google + one of your go-to communication sources?
[2018/06/28 12:41] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): VWER (Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable) google community
[2018/06/28 12:41] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/101630374387475211030
[2018/06/28 12:41] Sheila Yoshikawa: There are still people which SLED reaches, as mostly people haven’t have not signed off from it
[2018/06/28 12:41] Valibrarian Gregg: yes Sheila! good idea- I post on occasion
[2018/06/28 12:42] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): If you want to keep up with VWER events, follow this: https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/101630374387475211030
[2018/06/28 12:42] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[2018/06/28 12:43] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): The notice on the cristal library was posted 3 days ago
[2018/06/28 12:44] Valibrarian Gregg: yes Thinkerer
[2018/06/28 12:44] Sheila Yoshikawa: there is Hiro’s initiative
[2018/06/28 12:44] Sheila Yoshikawa: that he has been doing for years particularly with science etc. places
[2018/06/28 12:47] Sheila Yoshikawa: I think they are more complimentary
[2018/06/28 12:47] Sheila Yoshikawa: than competitive
[2018/06/28 12:48] Sheila Yoshikawa: no I don’t see her
[2018/06/28 12:48] Valibrarian Gregg: oh and Lan Yaria has a good selection of virtual landmarks….right?
[2018/06/28 12:48] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes that has happened to me
[2018/06/28 12:49] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes Yan Laria, that is who I was thinking of
[2018/06/28 12:49] Sheila Yoshikawa: no not really
[2018/06/28 12:49] Sheila Yoshikawa: you said it very well ;-))
[2018/06/28 12:49] Valibrarian Gregg: ty Sheila 🙂
[2018/06/28 12:49] Valibrarian Gregg: I think we are still learning what the best purposes of a virtual world library actually are!
[2018/06/28 12:50] Valibrarian Gregg: Yes handing out website links is certainly not a good purpose!
[2018/06/28 12:50] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes we can hear
[2018/06/28 12:50] Valibrarian Gregg: She could reboot her computer
[2018/06/28 12:50] Sheila Yoshikawa: the universal solution
[2018/06/28 12:50] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes weird
[2018/06/28 12:52] Sheila Yoshikawa: and also there is what the virtual library can do and what the virtual librarian can do, which is not exactly the same
[2018/06/28 12:53] Valibrarian Gregg: so true Sheila
[2018/06/28 12:53] ThinkererSelby Evans (thinkerer.melville): Sheila — VWER should promote the G+ VWER community more
[2018/06/28 12:53] Valibrarian Gregg: a library and a librarian are not the same thing
[2018/06/28 12:53] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[2018/06/28 12:53] Valibrarian Gregg: and time zones- yes!
[2018/06/28 12:54] Sheila Yoshikawa: at the moment we are trying to get the website back into shape, but then we definitely need to improve our strategy in other platforms like Google+ @Selby
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes I think it is time to finish now!
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: Bye!
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: Next week it is Kali
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: as I am away
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: at VWMOOC a session for me
[2018/06/28 12:55] Sheila Yoshikawa: plus chairing a panel
[2018/06/28 12:55] Valibrarian Gregg: perfect!
[2018/06/28 12:56] Sheila Yoshikawa: sorry I hadn’t got my voice set up and I’m being lazy with text
[2018/06/28 12:56] Sheila Yoshikawa: yes
[2018/06/28 12:57] Sheila Yoshikawa: indeed
[2018/06/28 12:57] Valibrarian Gregg: We IM each other- sure- but an emphasis on the networking would make it more worthwhile
[2018/06/28 12:58] Valibrarian Gregg: indeed…the mooc never ends!
[2018/06/28 12:59] Valibrarian Gregg: np Sheila
[2018/06/28 12:59] Valibrarian Gregg: Thank you for having me today – and the time for the tour
